A new international study has warned that by the year 2050 more than half of all adults and about one-third of children, teenagers, and young adults around the world could be overweight or obese. The study was published in The Lancet, a well-known British medical journal, and it looked at data from more than 200 countries. Researchers say the problem is growing fastest in Asia and Africa, where populations are going up. If nothing changes, the global number of overweight people could rise to about 4.55 billion, which is close to half of the world’s population. Experts describe this as a “profound tragedy” but believe it can still be prevented if governments act quickly. In the UK, the numbers are also worrying. The total number of overweight adults could grow from 38.4 million in 2021 to 49 million in 2050. Among adults over 25, the number is predicted to rise from 33 million to 43 million. Children will also be affected: 2.6 million children aged 5 to 14 may be overweight, compared with 2.4 million in 2021. For young people aged 15 to 24, the number may grow to 3.4 million. This increase will put huge pressure on hospitals and medical services. At the moment, obesity already costs the NHS about £6.5 billion each year, and this is expected to rise. Being overweight also increases the risk of many serious illnesses, such as heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, dementia, liver and kidney problems, and several types of cancer. Experts say the cause is not a “failure of willpower.” They point to large international food and drink companies that make huge profits from selling unhealthy products. Researchers believe that only strong action from governments, changes in the food industry, and new medicines can help stop this global health crisis.
